Depict Research

Amusements, Martin Cannon (2017) -
https://www.depict.org/2017/amusements/?category_request=2017

This was the first depict that caught my attention. it wasn't because there was lots going on in fact this film has the opposite and has just one simple thing going on. Which is two friends (or maybe more) drinking beer and setting fire to a firework and simply watching it for the whole 90 seconds.
This video has no narrative until the very end when the girl simply states "That was shit." this is the part of the video that really stands out to me and will always be how I remember the video by. The mixture of how she looks at the guy before and the simple that was shit sentence really gets the point across that she is definitely not impressed with the gesture.
During the whole 90 seconds there are only a few different shots. The first one is a shot of the back of theirs heads where they are leaning against the fence. This is an eye level shot. Personally i feel this shot works really well with showing the awkwardness the pair might be feeling due to them being quite a distance away from each other. Within this shot you can also tell that they are in a quite isolated area which helps set the scene and could foreshadow the fact that they may be doing something dangerous as they are by themselves. The second shot which is a long shot shows the body language which gives us a better insight of what the characters are doing and then we can then begin to imagine what is happening.
Along with the visuals there is also a couple of sound effects these being, A bottle cap being opened at the very start while the title card is being played and the fizzing of the firework that is present throughout the majority of the film. The bottle cap at the start I feel has a big impacts as you cant see the bottles being open which then allows the audience to start to think where they are and whats going on. When I first watched this i thought they where in pub. This is good as it allows the audience to interpret the clip how they want too.

Lighter, Harry Plowden (2017)-
https://www.depict.org/2017/lighter/?category_request=2017

Lighter is based on the topic of Homelessness. This becomes very clear by the first shot. This shot uses a very powerful and intense narrative of people talking over each other stating that they got no change or that they need it for bus. The way the narrative is layered to make effect of everyone talking at once gives the impression that the homeless guy is playing all the comments back in his head and almost seems like he is in fact trying to escape the voices. This point is backed up by the medium shot of the  homeless guy walking at quite a pace while looking over his shoulder to check what is behind him.
This shot is also edited to look like a Homemade video. The quality is quite poor and slightly blury
which fits in well with the idea of the guy escaping as the way the shot is filmed also looks like the person with the camera is the thoughts and comments that follow and watch the guys every move.
Later on in the clip there is very quick and snappy pan which focuses on a guy walking past the homeless guy with a cigarette in his hand. To start of with the guy isn't in focus at all then as he gets closer the camera zooms in to him smoking the cigarette. The way this is filmed makes it look like its a POV from the homeless guys perspective as he is hunting for cigarettes. We can tell its cigarettes he is looking for as the pan  focuses on only the cigarette and at the end of the shot when the guy drops the cigarette an the homeless guy picks up the cigarette he adds it to a pile of cigarettes butts that he has already collected.
Overall, This film i think is extremely powerful in exploring how a homeless person feels daily and how they have to beg or scrounge just for a bit relief and something they can join. Also this film shows that people are quick to not offer help and just judge.

A Picture Can Say a Thousand words, Tom Mansfield (2005)
https://www.depict.org/2005/a-picture-can-say-a-thousand-words/?category_request=2005

I Personally didn't enjoy this depict as much as the other two as it took a while to understand what was going on. However what really impressed me and lead me to eventually like it a bit more was the sound. The sound was a upbeat funky track which is one of them tracks that leads you to tap your feet to the beat without you realising. Which works really well as the track is that catchy you physically cannot stop your feet from tapping leading to audience interaction without physically pressing a button or doing something on screen. Also another impressive thing is how they have matched the beat of the track to the keys being pressed. This gives the impression that the guy is actually making the music with his type writer which is very clever.
In terms of visuals to start of with its very hard to understand what is going on until the music kicks in then you start to see that he is literally making a picture out of  a thousand words. However, How you get different angles of the typewriter really makes people want to carry on watching. The majority of this video is extreme close ups of the typewriter and its inner workings. In each shot you can see the separate parts of the machine working and moving with each press of the keys. This makes the film more fascinating and appealing. Not many people have seen how a typewriter work or even know what a type writer making the film slightly educational. The snappy cuts within editing makes the film even more fast paced and creates a bit of tension.

Looking for Marilyn,Anna Blandford and Anna Valdez Hanks (2008)
https://www.depict.org/2008/looking-for-marilyn/?category_request=2008

This Depict is based of Marilyn Monroe and seems to be about Monroe and how she influenced a lot of people. Looking deeper in to the meaning of this we could infer that Monroe still influences people to this day. This can be seen in the scene where Monroe  walks past a group of girls in modern clothing who then follow her and bombards her with autographs and paparazzi but then there is a couple of shots where the girls are frantically buying the Monroe wigs and her iconic dress. Implying that she is an inspirational character to people.
The genre of this film seemed to be historical with the whole 90 seconds being in black and white and they made the film have a vintage filter over it which made it look like it had been filmed on vintage cameras.
At the start of the film there is a  montage of Monroe getting ready for what we would assume is a big night out as she really focuses on putting on eyelashes and her iconic beauty spot. This montage can be seen to be the establishing shot which allows the audience to know what the film is about instantly.

Meow, Breech Asher Harani (2017)-
https://www.depict.org/2017/meow/?category_request=2017

This Depict was full of tension from the word go. The genre for this film is clearly Horror. Th creators have used sound, visuals and editing for really grab the audiences attention. The sound and visuals link together to create brilliant jump scares. Though out the film their is what seems a trapped cat meowing for attention but as she gets closer it gets louder and louder then it goes quiet then all of a sudden there is a loud high pitched meow and a pair of eyes come darting from the tree towards the audience. This affects the audience as before the eyes there is a moment of darkness and silence then a high pitched scream that no one expects. The tension is created due to the darkness which then scares the audience.
Camera angles are really effective within this film an help bring the story alive. At the end of the flim there is a pov shoot which looks like the girl is looking round to see where the creature has gone at this moment the camera is panning left to right extremely fast as the noise intensifys. At this point the audience are on edge of their seats as they feel like they are the girl due to the angles. Then the angle really quickly long shot where you can see the creature behind the girl then the noise gets louder then it has ever been which builds tension. Then the film ends on a jump scare where the creature grabs the girl and the screen goes black. This end scene then leads to a cliffhanger and the audience wanting to see what happens next. This film ends with  lot of questions left unanswered which hen allows the film to go further and makes people talk about it to others leading to more views and votes.
